"Sensitivity can be thought of as the first step towards learning about oneself within the context of one’s interaction or relationship with people of a different culture." (NAHO, 2008a, p. 27)
Oxytocin training programmes are sensitive to cultural, racial and ethnic differences and they are infused with lived experience perspectives. We have developed a range of training and support packages based on racially equitable approaches.
We also incorporate approaches to culturally competent care as developed in the US. They have proposed strategies which have been promoted in various training manuals and textbooks to improve healthcare professionals’ response to diversity. Whilst these programmes, in different forms, offer structural competence they have overlooked sensitivities, including attitudes, perceptions and a reflection on one’s own values and power. Also, mainly, they have been decontextualised, from where it matters, thus ignoring the fundamental concepts used to frame human problems and solutions.
