culturally appropriate advocacy training
the advocacy course
The course
All Oxytocin-Learning courses combine interactive learning sessions, webinars, presentations and self reading. Our programmes are designed to equip participants with a lucid understanding of composite attributes to flourish as culturally appropriate advocates for vulnerable people interacting with mental health services.
Oxytocin design topics to ensure participants have a solid grounding in the way race, ethnicity and culture interact with an individual’s lived experience of advocacy and mental health services.
Activities and learning material so participants develop a strong understanding of multiple forms of racism and patterns of inequality and how these relate to the racialised lived experience.
A detailed exploration of differential explanatory health models and frameworks and an introduction to frameworks to ensure these have been considered in your clients care.
Participants will acquire a thorough understanding of rights-based legislation. In particular, they will gain insight into the key provisions, conventions and case law within the Equality and Human Rights Acts and how they relate specifically to the abuses more commonly experienced by racialised minority groups.
Oxytocin training equips the learner with the skills and knowledge to allow them, as advocates, to represent and challenge abuses in an anti-discriminatory manner. Participants will also be introduced to our care pathway decision-making points and processes typology so they can apply their new knowledge and skills to examine racial bias at crucial junctures pertinent to advocacy and related interfaces.
“Neuroimaging studies show that our brains work hard to process positive information about out-group members than negative information. And we do just the opposite with in-group members.”Â
Dr Jennifer Eberhardt
Participants commitment
Our blended learning programmes require participants to commit to the length of our 11 or 15 week programme. Each of these programmes entail the equivalent of one day of learning per week over an 11 week period (15 weeks for peer advocates), incorporating a one week mid-programme break for review and refresh.
Each lesson requires participants to carry out 3-5 hours pre-course activities, including self-reading, videos and presentations before attending a scheduled 2-3 hours interactive webinar. Each activity has been specifically designed to embed learning in different ways which is why each part of the course is essential.
Course content
Oxytocin-Learning courses provide stimulating opportunities to engage and learn, in an online or face-2-face capacity. Oxytocin culturally appropriate advocacy training is the only one of its kind. It builds on, but goes further than contemporary culturally competency training packages by recognising the specific and independent role of advocates. The training focuses on developing the knowledge, sensitivities and skills of advocates covering over 30 competencies across key areas of learning.
